Dealing with what-ifs in Christian life

Regrets and what-ifs can leave us staring at walls, obsessed with a past that can’t be changed, a mistake that wracks us with guilt. But how do these what-ifs affect the God-fearing person? And what can we do as Christians to deal with these thoughts?

Different philosophical thoughts suggest dealing with what-ifs by risking, taking chances, and living in the moment. But the Christian perspective is to practice focus and restraint. Indulging in each and every option presented to us does not mean we are confronting problems head on, as some of them are mere temptations. As Christians, we must take responsibility for our actions and learn to say no because our faith is strong.

And if a regret haunts us because it was indeed a mistake, we have to remember that everyone makes them, and our God is a forgiving one. We have to learn to forgive ourselves if we are to truly move on. Also, there are times when outcomes we blame ourselves for are not entirely our fault, exaggerated by circumstances beyond our control.

In a world of what-ifs, one often expects sentences to end with question marks and ellipses. We need to aspire for more periods. And for every what-if, there’s always a looming what then: which is the start of a new, faith-driven story altogether.
